Kingdom Discipleship: What does it mean to be Saved?

Hello Friends, I hope that the you are all kept by the Lord, and all is well with you.

This month, at our church, the theme for the month has been on building kingdom disciples. And it took me back to 2018 when I started this blog. And the Lord gave me a simple instruction through Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV

Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

This series at church took me back to the days when I was very consistent in the instruction I received to speak the word of God through this platform, because that is how I started this blog 5 years ago.

Ultimately our job on earth as believers is to proclaim to the unsaved about Jesus. So over the next few weeks, I would like to go back to the basics of our faith which is pegged on the person of Jesus Christ.

What does it Mean to Be Saved?

The simplest definition of salvation is to be delivered (or rescued) from peril. According to ancienthebrew.com the root word of salvation is found in (KJV, Deuteronomy 20:4 which says For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. The Hebrew word translated as “save” in the verse above, is the verbal root ישע (Y-Sh-Ah, S) meaning to rescue. The context of this word throughout the  Old Testament is to rescue someone from his enemy, a trouble or illness, such as can be seen in the verse above. Simply put, Jesus came to rescue us from sin.

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

If it were not for the saving power of Jesus Christ, our souls were to be completely destroyed.

Coming into the new testament where the 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are primarily based on the life of Jesus Christ and end in His death and ascension into Heaven.

Our Belief as Christians

This is usually the basis of our belief as Christians, because we believe that Jesus is the son of God. We also believe that he was sent to earth by God in human form and that He died on the cross and rose again. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

Romans 10:8-10 says that, “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

As sons and daughters of God, our faith in Jesus Christ and that public confession is what sets us apart from other religions.

How Do I Get Saved?

In case you are wondering how you can get saved, it’s really simple. Just say this words out loud.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for dying on the cross for me. I confess that you are the Son of God, that you died on the cross and rose again and you ascended into heaven where are seated at the right hand of the Father. I ask you to forgive me your sins. I give you permission to be Lord over my life, and from this day henceforth I will follow you. May you guide me into all truth. Amen.

If you have prayed this very simple prayer, welcome to the family of Christ!

What Next After I have Prayed and I am Now saved?

  • Join a bible Believing church. Most important thing right now is to get plugged into a Christian community by identifying a church
  • Begin daily devotion session. Set aside 30 to 45 minutes everyday to study the word of God.Buy a Bible and make a habit of reading it every day. I recommend having a physical bible and a notebook to jot down some notes on what you have learnt. I also recommend great apps such as YouVersion that has daily devotions and you can use this to supplement the bible study.
  • The Bible is the best way to train yourself to hear the word of God. Its the best habit you can form especially as a new Christian. Bible study is important for any beliver no mater how long you have been saved. Please do not neglect this area
  • Pray. When starting, its not easy. But I recommend starting by praying the word of God. You can pick a Scripture and use it to pray. With time this gets easier.
  • Most importantly, invite the Holy Spirit to help you as He has been assigned to be your helper. Do not be afraid to ask him for help

For those of us who have been saved, we continue to practise the above. However, let us all actively participate in the instruction given in Matthew 28. This week, tell someone about Jesus Christ.
