We all love the Bible verses about God’s promises to us, the nice prophecies about how God is going to bless us, don’t we? But what happens when the after a year, the word that the Lord has spoke to you doesn’t come to pass? Year after year, you have been waiting for the word to come to pass but it doesn’t. Does this sound like something you’re currently going through? If so, this is a word for you.
Let’s go to the book of Genesis to the story of Abraham and Sarah. God promised Abraham that He would be a father of many nations in Genesis 17:16
I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
We all know how the story goes, with Sarah giving his servant to Abraham so that she could bear a son because she felt that the Lord was taking too long to come through. Perhaps she even didn’t believe that the Lord would keep His promise.
Now if I am being honest, I have read this story before and judged Sarah. However, I have since come to relate with her a lot. Here’s why….
Whenever God promises us something, it rarely comes to pass immediately. And a lot of times, it will take years before it manifests. In such seasons, God wants us to wait on Him.
To wait means, “to allow time to go by, especially while staying in one place without doing very much, until someone comes, until something that you are expecting happens or until you can do something” (The Cambridge Dictionary)
Using the definition of waiting, we should do the following while we are waiting:
- Stay in one place without doing very much. Which means that you need to hold on tightly to whatever promise God made to you. Do not allow doubt, fear and anxiety to cause to forget what He said to you.
- Stay in that place until God comes. Staying in that place means staying in the presence of God, in a place of prayer, worship, praise, fasting. Whatever you do, stick close to the Lord till He comes through. Remind Him of His promises, even hen you feel discouraged that He is taking too long, stay close to Him.
- Stay in that place till that which you are expecting happens. Don’t quit on God. Has it been 20 years and that promise still has not come to pass? Is it 50 years? Whatever amount of time, DO NOT quit on God.
God is Always on Time
Genesis 21:1-2 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him
God is never late. in the season that He has planned, the promise that He has purposed for a thing to happen, it will come to pass. Just like with Sarah, in the verse above, He shall fulfil His word to you.
However, you and I must learn to wait on the Lord.

God, teach me patience. Strengthen my faith even as I wait on you.
